Wolverhampton for Everyone is a new social lab for the city, which is connecting communities to unlock positive change. This brief involved creating a new, contemporary and vibrant brand identity for the social lab which would help to create a visible platform for the group to inspire positive change in Wolverhampton.
This identity needed to form a visual language for the team to use to communicate their purpose and to help promote their work around the city, enabling visibility and showcasing their impact and proactive mission.
At the heart of this brand concept I was inspired by the make-up of the city of Wolverhampton and all of the diverse areas that it includes, each with their own identities, communities and unique physical and cultural assets.
I created a graphic interpretation of the city map in a bright colour palette which could then be dissected into all its component wards. Each part of the map is equally important and integral to the vision of Wolverhampton for Everyone.
From a visual point of view this created a set of eye-catching shapes which can be presented as flat colourful shapes or outlines. These shapes can then be combined to develop a visual system where they connect, interplay and overlap as a reference to the social lab’s collaborative approach. The layering of colour, line, and photography within the shapes creates an organic and ever-changing layout across brand material.
The core logo complements the identity, featuring a clean and bold typeface with a playful character. The colourful frame of linking lines alludes to the progression and connectivity which the group promotes, with the joining together of communities being integral to its vision.
A circular icon is used for social media, abbreviating the lab’s name to WE, again a nod to its inclusive and collective approach.
Applications of the brand include a brand playbook, which sets out the social lab’s ambitions, purpose and principles and invites people to collaborate in powering change, along with promotional flyers and banners for specific events and a bank of social media assets and templates.
After the first year of the lab’s growth activity, I produced a report which communicates the impact of the platform and incorporates infographics and diagrams to bring the lab’s leading ideas and network to life.
